Portrait of a Family Group
By G B Moroni
This portrait hung at Linley Wood, Talke, Staffordshire, from 1857 until 1949.
It is believed to have been purchased in 1857 by James Stamford Caldwell from the sale of the Contents of Alton Towers, seat of the Earls of Shrewsbury.
In 1925 this group portrait by Moroni was not recorded by Maj Gen Frederick Crofton Heath-Caldwell on the list of the contents of Linley Wood. However, we can safely assume that it was in Linley Wood in 1925, as it was later sold in 1949.
This group portrait was sold in the Sotheby auction of 2 November 1949, as "Lot 87. By G. B. Moroni. A Portait Group: portrait of a gentlemen and a lady in black dresses, and a little girl in a brown dress wearing a coral necklace, holding a pair of doves with both hands. 28 ¼ inch by 34 inch. From the collection of the Earl of Shrewsbury, Alton Towers.
