Portrait of Princess Mary eldest daughter of Charles II by Wissing

This portrait hung at Linley Wood, Talke, Staffordshire, from 1848 until 1949.

It is assumed that it was oringinally purchased in 1848 by James Stamford Caldwell from the sale of the Contents of Stowe House, formally the property of the Duke of Buckingham.

In 1925 the portrait of Princess Mary was listed by Maj Gen Frederick Crofton Heath-Caldwell as hanging in the Drawing Room of Linley Wood as follows: "Portrait of Princess Mary eldest daughter of Charles II, by Wissing "I never saw a better specimen".  Frame of that period."

This portrait was sold in the Sotheby auction of 2 November 1949 as one of two portraits in lot 90 described as follows: "Wissing. Three-quarter length Portrait of Princess Mary, seated in blue and brown robes, holding a rose.  Van Dyck (School of).  Three-quarter length Portrait of Mary Lady Wharton, in white dress, picking roses.  Both originally from the Stowe Park sale."
