There is a note in the Dictionary of National Biography. He was the son of a solicitor in Wigan, Lancashire, where he was born. Educated at Warrington Grammar School and joined his uncle as a solicitor. Town clerk of Warrington 1847-1858. He died unmarried. His library which included that of his uncle John Fitchett was sold by Sotheby in 1882.
