John Milbourne Marsh Postmaster General of Jamaica 1787 - 1826

Born: 22 July 1787 at Fulham, Christened there 8 September 1787.  Died in Jamaca 7 June 1826 in his 39th year.
Son of: John Marsh (1747-1823) and Lucy Gosling (Gostling) (1759-1845).
Brother of:
1. Rev George Augustus Eliott Marsh MA (1790-1867) who married Julia Murdock (1792?-1854).
2. Lady Eliza Downman (1799-18??) who married Sir Thomas Downman.
Married:
1st Emmeline Adriana (1792-1812).
2nd Frances Elizabeth Grant at Kingston on 28 October 1816.
John and Emmeline had issue:
1. A son who died an infant 10 November 1812 aged 2 months.
John and Frances had issue:
1. Francis Lucy Wise (nee Marsh, 1819?-1889) who married George Foster Wise.
2. John Milbourne Augustus Marsh (1820-1891) who married Grace Elizabeth Pinnock.

John Milbourne Marsh: An Overview

We know about John from the following:
1. The 'History of the Ancient Family of Marsh' by Joseph J. Green, Archivist and Genealogist, 1903, revised to date by Wm. Ernest Marsh, of Marston, Bromley, Kent, 1912.
2. Entries copied from the Bible of Rev George Augustus Eliott Marsh.

The 'History of the Ancient Family of Marsh' by Joseph J. Green, Archivist and Genealogist, 1903, revised to date by Wm. Ernest Marsh, of Marston, Bromley, Kent, 1912.  This gives very little information other than what I have noted above.  It should be noted that in this book the name Milbourne is spelt "Milburne" which is not how John's ancestors spelt their name.

In the Island Record Office, in Jamaica, there is a record of John Milbourne Marsh marrying Frances Elizabeth Grant at Kingston on 28 October 1816 (Kingston Copy Register 1721-1825: Marriages, vol.1).  This record is in the Island Record Office.

I have been given the following note regarding the death of John's second wife:
Frances Elizabeth Marsh, Wife of J Mibourne Marsh Esq And daughter of Dr David Grant Born 8th Dec 1798 And died 16th April 1819 aged 20 years and four months Leaving a disconsolate husband sorrowing too her brother and sisters afflicted friends and two infants, Frances Mary Anne (Lucy) and John Milbourne Marsh. Death lies on her like an untimely frost [lies?] on the fairest flower of all the fields.  She was good as she was fair!  Pure in thought as angels are!
