Elizabeth Marsh (nee Tresilian)

(1769-1838)

Born: 1769? and died 28th February 1838 aged 69 years. 
Daughter of: Leonard Tresilian Esq.
Sister of:
1. Mary Ann Fresilian.
2. Possibly others.
Elizabeth was the third wife of: William Marsh (1755?-1846).
Although William had a number of children with his first two wives, Elizabeth did not have any children.

 

Elizabeth Marsh: An Overview

We know of Elizabeth from the following sources:
1. Her will.
2. Memorial inside St Mary Magdalene, Gillingham, Kent.
3. "History of the Ancient Family of Marsh" by Joseph J. Green, Archivist and Genealogist, 1903, revised to date by Wm. Ernest Marsh, of Marston, Bromley, Kent, 1912.

The above sources tell us very little about her.  Her will reads as follows:

This is the last Will and Testament of me Elizabeth Marsh wife of William Marsh of Knightsbridge in the County of Middlesex Esquire. I hereby revoke all former Wills by me at any time made. And in pursuence of the Power reserved to me in my Marriage Settlement and in exercise and execution thereof Do hereby give devise and bequeath limit and Appoint All my Freehold Copyhold and Leasehold Estates Unto and to the use of my said Dear Husband William Marsh and my Cousin Henry Rowles of Stratton Street, Piccadilly and Lancelot Holland of Dartmouth Street Westminster Esquires their Heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns according to the nature and Tenure of the same Estates respectively UPON TRUST to receive the Annual rents and Profits of the same and thereout in the first place to pay unto my old and faithful servant Ann Gray during her natural life One Annuity or Yearly Sum of Twenty five pounds Sterling clear of all deductions whatsoever by equal half yearly payments the first payment thereof to be made at the end of Six Calendar Months next after my Decease together with a proportionate part of such Annuity from the last half yearly day of payment to the day of her death. And subject to the payment of the said Annuity UPON TRUST to pay residue of the said rents and Profits from time to time as the same shall become due and be received Unto my Dear Sister Mary Ann Fresilian for and during the term of her natural life. And from and after the Decease of my said Sister I do hereby declare that my said Trustees their Heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns respectively shall stand seized and possessed of the said Freehold Copyhold and Leasehold Estates IN TRUST for my Dear Daughter in Law Mary Marsh during her natural life and after her Death in trust for all and every the child and children of the said Mary Marsh if more than one share and share alike as Tenants in Common and not as joint tenants .. and their respective Heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns (more crossed out) And in case the said Mary Marsh shall die without leaving issue or shall die leaving none then living at her death, and if such issue shall also die under the age of 21 years, then in Trust for (more crossed out) my Dear Daughter in Law Georgiana Nelson Marsh during her natural life and after her Death In Trust for all and every the Child and Children of the said Georgiana Nelson Marsh if more than one Share and Share alike as Tenants in Common and not as joint Tenants his her and their respective Heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns (more crossed out). And in Case the said Georgiana Nelson Marsh shall die without leaving Issue living at her Death or shall die leaving Issue then living and as such issue shall also die under age of 21 years then In Trust for such person and person and for such Intents and purposes as the survivor of them the said Mary Marsh and Georgiana Nelson Marsh shall be Deceased or (insert to side - Provided always and I do hereby empower the Trustees or Trustee for the time being of my Estates during the - lives of my Daughter-in-Law - executor of them or - child that with the consent o my Daughter in Law which they shall also be entitled to the Rents and Profits thereof to permit Leases of my Estates to any persons or person for any term not exceeding 21 years in possession of the best Rents can be obtained without taking any premium in forfeit for the same -) Will to be duly executed direct or appoint. And as to any Apparel Plate Watches Jewellery Rings Trinkets Laces and other Paraphernalia of which I may die possessed and have power to dispose by this my Will I give and bequeath the same in the following manner. To my said Daughter in Law Mary Marsh the large single stone Diamond Broach which was formerly a Ring of her Dear Father's and given to me by him, my Cameo Necklace, Earrings, and Bracelets, the Gold Repeating Watch given to me by my Dear Hustbands my Diamond Hoop Ring - my Square Single Stone Brilliant ring - my ring with the two Brilliants and tow Emeralds - my Ear rings with Emerald Tops and Drops, and intermixed with Brilliant  - my Maltese Cross composed of Emeralds and Brilliants and a Small Pin to match the same - my red Cameo Broach representing Cupids and a Greyhound and the emerald Stone Broach set round with Brilliants which has been lately given me by her said Father. And to my said Daughter in Law Georgina Nelson Marsh I bequeath the Gold Watch and Seals given me by my much valued Friend Mr Richard Holland and which I usually wear - my Diamond Ear rings - my Brilliant Clasps to my Bead Necklace and  Bracelets - my Circular Broach composed of Small Brilliants my Maltese Cross of Small Brilliants with my (Trinket crossed out) jewel jewel (written twice) Box. I bequeath to be equally divided between my two dear daughters in law to whom I also give my Laces Wearing Apparel and all other my Property and effects not hereinbefore specifically bequeathed (more crossed out - I give to my two dear Daughters in Law Mary and Georgiana Nelson Marsh and which I am certain) being assured they will divide and keep or bestow them where they may deem it right with the most perfect cordiality and propriety. Also I give and bequeath to my Friends (more crossed out - the said Lancelot Holland) Mr Richard Holland of Moreton Hampstead in Devonshire  - my Cousin Mr Henry Holland of Albany, Mr Lancelot Holland Lady Wilmot (crossed out Mr Daniel Cracefield ) and Miss Charlotte Holland ( his Sisters) Ten Guineas each for a Ring and entreat their Acceptance of the same as a small token of my esteem and regard and to my said Dear Friend Mrs Henry Rowles the sum of Nineteen Guineas requesting her Acceptance of the same to purchase some trifling article as a token of my sincere and affectionate esteem for her and in remembrance of me and lastly I nominate and appoint my said Dear Husband together with the said Henry Rowles and Lancelot Holland Executors of this my Will In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal this 18th day of May in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty one.

Signed sealed and published and declared by the said Elizabeth Marsh the Testatrix as and for her Will and Testament in the presence of us who in her presence at her request and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as in Witnesses.

Tablet in St Mary Magdalene, Gillingham, Kent.  The inscription reads:

In Memory of William Marsh Esq. 
formerly of Knightsbridge in the County of Middlesex, late of York Gate, Regents Park, who died 1st January 1846 aged 90 years. 
Also of Elizabeth, his third wife, daughter of Leonard Tresilian Esq. who died 28th February 1838, aged 69 years.
